The initiative is designed to evaluate the fuel’s effects on the vessel’s equipment and verify operational safety under real-world conditions. Through this effort, NYK seeks to accumulate technical expertise that will support the broader use of high-purity biofuels and further accelerate efforts to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Background and Objectives

Amid growing global demand for decarbonization, the shipping industry has been actively introducing alternative fuels that contribute to reducing GHG emissions. Biofuels are regarded as a promising “drop-in fuel” option because they can be used with existing ship engines and infrastructure.

NYK has been advancing the use of biofuels through various initiatives. In 2024, the company conducted a trial using biofuel blend B24** and subsequently expanded practical usage to B30.** However, there remains limited global experience with the long-term continuous use of B100.

In this trial, NYK will operate a car carrier continuously on B100 for one year to evaluate the impact on engines, fuel supply systems, and operational practices. High-purity biofuels such as B100 are known to be susceptible to degradation from oxygen, light, and heat, raising concerns about the stability of such fuels during long-term use.

By collecting long-term operational data through this trial, NYK aims to accumulate valuable technical insights to support both the safe operation of vessels and the wider adoption of high-purity biofuels.

Future Outlook

Biofuels offer opportunities to reduce GHG emissions across the entire lifecycle (well-to-wake) compared with conventional fossil fuels. Building on the findings from this trial, NYK will continue technical evaluations and promote initiatives aimed at realizing sustainable maritime transportation.

* B100

Reducing GHG Emissions Approx. 30% by Installing Lashing Belts on Newly Built Vessel “Elder Leader”

Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (“NYK”), NYK Trading Corporation (“NYKT”), and Rexxam Co., Ltd. (“Rexxam”) have jointly introduced “eco CLASPER”, a newly developed car lashing belt made from recycled polyester fiber. On March 26, the three companies completed the installation of the belts on the newly built pure car and truck carrier Elder Leader. Compared to conventional products, “eco CLASPER” reduces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions generated during the weaving process by approximately 28.3%.

Background

Car carriers require vast quantities of lashing belts to secure vehicles during transportation. This results in significant consumption of petroleum-derived materials and challenges related to disposal after use. To address these issues and reduce environmental impact, the three companies began jointly developing lashing belts using recycled polyester fiber in 2022.

Since 2024, the prototypes have undergone repeated onboard testing on NYK-operated car carriers, including Cassiopeia Leader, to verify strength and durability. These trials confirmed that the product meets the safety standards set by NYK and offers durability equivalent to existing belts, leading to its formal introduction.

Full-Scale Introduction

On Elder Leader, the first vessel to adopt the “eco CLASPER”, the lashing belts used for securing transported cars have been provided. The belts are made of 99.5% recycled yarn, reducing GHG emissions during the weaving process by approximately 28.3% compared to belts made from petroleum-derived yarn.

If implemented across the entire NYK-operated car carrier fleet of approximately 120 vessels, annual GHG emissions could be reduced by an estimated 400 tons.

On February 18, NYK welcomed 9 Australian university students interning in Japan as part of the New Colombo Plan (NCP) — a next-generation development assistance initiative sponsored by Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. This marks the third year that NYK has participated in the program.

The NCP is an Australian government initiative designed to cultivate human resources with a deep understanding of the Indo-Pacific region by supporting Australian university students seeking to study abroad and participate in internships in Asian countries. Since 2017, Mitsubishi Group companies operating in Australia have jointly hosted the New Colombo Plan Mitsubishi Group Internship Program, which supports Australian students pursuing international experiences. This year, eight Mitsubishi Group companies** participated in the internship program, which ran from February 9 to February 24, with each company hosting interns in turn.

At NYK, the interns gained firsthand experience of the operations supporting Japan’s maritime industry through a tour of the Yokohama (Daikoku) Car Terminal and a ship-handling simulator experience at Japan Marine Science Inc. (JMS). In classroom sessions, NYK introduced its relationship with Australia and its diverse range of businesses, including automotive logistics, space development projects, and ammonia-related projects.

The NYK Group will continue to create opportunities for active exchange with Australia to foster the development of next-generation global talent and deepen understanding of diverse cultures, while further strengthening the partnership between Japan and Australia.

A flagship initiative of the Australian government designed to support Australian citizens in undertaking study abroad, language training, and internships in the Indo-Pacific region. The program consists of three components: the NCP Scholarship, which supports long-term overseas study of up to 19 months; the NCP Mobility Program, which supports short-term overseas study; and a semester-based program that supports study abroad on a semester basis.
Through these programs, the NCP aims to enrich students’ personal development by creating opportunities for them to engage with the diverse cultures, languages, business environments, and educational systems of neighboring countries.

NYK and Nara University of Education have signed a joint research project to study the migratory routes and timing of the wandering glider, Pantala flavescens. Leveraging NYK-operated vessels that travel the world’s oceans, the project will collect photos, videos, and location data of P. flavescens and other insects observed during voyages, with the aim of clarifying their migratory routes and timing. This is the world’s first initiative in which a corporation and an academic institution have collaborated to use a large number of vessels sailing around the world to conduct ecological surveys of P. flavescens migrating over the ocean. This research is being conducted in partnership with the Usubaki Project, * a nationwide citizen science marking survey investigating the migration of P. flavescens in Japan, to shed light on the actual migration patterns of the species.

Pantala flavescens is found worldwide and is known for its ability to migrate across oceans. Due to their vast numbers and long-distance migrations, P. flavescens has the potential to significantly impact ecosystems in various regions. However, much about their ecology remains unknown. The upcoming offshore survey is expected to shed light on the long-distance migration of P. flavescens and help us better understand how ecosystems are connected on a global scale. NYK has already begun conducting surveys on some of its vessels and is providing observational data to support this research.

The NYK Group, guided by a management policy that prioritizes sustainability at its core, is proactively addressing social and environmental challenges under the theme of “Giving back to the oceans, the earth, and people.” By leveraging our global network that spans the world’s seas, we are committed to advancing ecosystem research and generating new insights that benefit both nature and society.

American Bureau of Shipping (“ABS”), ENEOS Corporation (“ENEOS”), Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (“NYK Line”), and SEACOR Holdings Inc. (“SEACOR”) have begun a joint study to develop a methanol bunkering*1 and supply chain network along the U.S. Gulf Coast.

The four parties aim to establish the first commercial-scale ship-to-ship*2 methanol bunkering operations in the U.S. In the global maritime industry, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has set a target of net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050, and practical solutions are increasingly required. Low-carbon methanol produced from renewable or bio-based sources is gaining attention as a next-generation marine fuel due to its easy handling as a liquid at ambient temperature and pressure, as well as its potential to reduce GHG emissions.

ENEOS will explore the procurement and supply of low-carbon methanol, including green methanol to be produced by C2X, a company in which ENEOS holds an equity stake, through the Beaver Lake Renewable Energy project in Louisiana*3.
NYK Line will leverage its experience in developing LNG bunkering infrastructure and provide technical expertise for preparing methanol bunkering vessels.
SEACOR will contribute its expertise as a long-term Jones Act qualified owner and operator of diversified assets across the U.S. coastwise and inland waterways, in addition to its design, engineering and construction capabilities.
ABS will provide class and regulatory support needed to establish methanol bunkering operations in the U.S.

Through this initiative, ABS, ENEOS, NYK Line and SEACOR aim to help realize a carbon-neutral future for the maritime industry.

The NYK Group extends its heartfelt condolences to everyone affected by the heavy rains resulting from multiple cyclones in Southeast Asia since late November 2025. Our thoughts are with those who have been displaced or have suffered the loss of loved ones, and we extend our deepest sympathies to all still facing difficult circumstances.

We will donate a total of 6 million yen to organizations, including the Red Cross society, to support relief efforts and reconstruction in Indonesia, Thailand, and Sri Lanka.

The NYK Group offers its sincere wishes for a swift and complete recovery of the affected communities.
